The RN unit manager is responsible for the management of the assigned unit. This includes planning, assignment, implementation and evaluation of direct resident care on that unit including the training and supervision of staff and scheduling regular meetings with the family of residents.
The RN Unit Manager must have proper techniques for the delivery of medications and treatments. Documentation in the medical record that reflects the residents’ condition, medication and treatments. The RN Unit Manager must use the prevention of disease and application of universal precautions. The RN Unit Manager must have experience in care of the elderly, chronically ill, restorative nursing, unit management and quality assurance. The RN Unit Manager must have the understanding of roles and functions of all levels of nursing staff and total health care team. The RN Unit Manager must possess or have the potential for leadership roles in interdisciplinary cooperation, staff development, and resident/family relationships. The RN Unit Manager must have the capability for independent decision-making, formulation and delegation of responsibility. The RN Unit Manager interacts with physicians, residents, families, volunteer workers, and other visitors to promote customer service. The RN Unit Manager must have the ability to communicate with residents, families and personnel and ability to remain calm under stress.
