Laundry Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY
The laundry assistant is responsible to provide a sufficient quantity of clean linen and resident clothing essential for the proper care, comfort and dignity of the residents and to assure that linen and resident clothing are handled, stored and processed so as to control the spread of infection and disease.

Open Position: Part Time every other weekend (Sat/Sun from 2:30 p – 11 p)

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
License/Certification/Registration:
None required.

Continuing Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.

Background:
Previous laundry experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Job Knowledge: None required.

Understanding of:
  • Must have an understanding of the needs of the elderly and must be able to relate well to the geriatric population.
  • Residents rights, confidentiality and preservation of the resident’s dignity and self-respect.
  • Exhibits genuine interest for the residents and family concerns, willingness to perform a variety of siimpl, repetitive routine tasks. Be willing and able to work as part of a team.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work indoors in laundry and nursing units. May work in a hot and humid environment with constant noise and/or vibrations from washers and dryers. May need to work beyond normal working hours in other positions temporarily when necessary. Will be required to work on weekends and holidays, and possibly on shifts other than the one hired. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Good physical and mental health. Must be able to withstand strenuous physical activity. Job requires: intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting in excess of 50 pounds (with assisting devices or help of other staff members) occasionally, and frequently lifting of up to 256 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; fine hand coordination, ability to communicate with residents, personnel and consultants; ability to distinguish smells, tastes and temperatures; ability to hear and respond to verbal stimuli; a keen sense of vision necessary for close inspection and attention to minute details and small objects, the ability to quickly detect and react to slight motions and/or the ability to accurately distinguish colors; ability to read and write; and ability to remain calm under stress. Manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment is necessary.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Must have the ability to communicate with residents, families and personnel and ability to remain calm under stress.

Principal contacts: Is involved with residents, co-workers, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc.

Exposure Risk: May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, etc. Loud noise on occasion. A possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities may require modifications to requirements unless it would pose a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others in the work place.
