Dietary Assistant - Full-time and Part-time

POSITION SUMMARY
The dietary assistant assists the cook in the preparation and service of meals. The dietary assistant reports to cook and/or Dietary Manager. The dietary assistant cleans and maintains equipment and work area in a safe and sanitary manner. 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
License/Certification/Registration:
None Required. 

Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.

Job Knowledge:
Quantity food production methods. 

Understanding of:
  • The needs of the aged and must be able to relate well to the geriatric population. 
  • Roles and functions of all levels or nursing staff and total health care team. 
  • Residents rights, confidentiality and preservation of the residents' dignity and self-respect. 
  • Other: Dependable. Be willing and able to work as part of a team. Ability to follow directions and complete tasks. Maintains a neat and well-groomed appearance. 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work indoors in well-lighted and ventilated wards and rooms. May need to work beyond normal working hours in other positions temporarily when necessary. May be required to work on weekends and holidays,_an_g J'.)_ossibly on shifts other than the one hired. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Good physical and mental health. Must be able to withstand strenuous physical activity. Job requires: intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting in excess of 50 pounds occasionally, and frequently lifting ofup to 25 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; fine hand coordination, ability to communicate with residents, personnel and consultants; ability to distinguish smells, tastes and temperatures; ability to hear and respond to verbal stimuli; a keen sense of vision necessary for close inspection and attention to minute details and small objects, the ability to quickly detect and react to slight motions and/or the ability to accurately distinguish colors; ability to read and write; and ability to remain calm under stress. Manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment is necessary.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Must have the ability to communicate with residents, families and personnel and ability to remain calm under stress. 

Principal contacts: Is involved with residents, co-workers, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. 

Exposure Risk: May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, etc. Loud noise on occasion. A possibility of cuts or minor burns or bruises using knives, slicers and equipment. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Potential for burns from cooking equipment, steam tables, hot beverage machines, hot and cold beverages and plate and pellet warmer. Potential for falls from wet/greasy floors. Exposure to various chemicals used for cleaning and sanitizing. Exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures and electrical equipment.
